Wednesday afternoon, a passer-by discovered skeletal remains in Colchester just off the Exit 16 southbound off-ramp.
“We get calls like this, but for it to be this close to the interstate is a bit out of the ordinary,” Vt. State Police Lt. Lance Burnham said.
State police and the medical examiner spent part of the afternoon sifting through the brush and removing the body. So far, they say they have no idea who it might be.
“We found no identification, but he was partially clothed, as it appears, which was also collected and will also go down as evidence,” Burnham said.
And they say whoever it was likely died years ago and the body has been decaying ever since.
“I would say it had been here a substantial amount of time, just based on the condition of the remains,” Burnham said. “But I would say definitely for a couple of years is what it looks like at this point.”
A mystery that now heads to the medical examiner’s office where they hope dental records will be able to figure out who the bones belong to and how they got there.
Again, they say it’s too early at this point to even speculate about who those bones belong to, but state police told us they are working with local authorities, like Colchester and Burlington police, to identify any leads.
