La Règle du jeu – Olympics 2016

A word to Chicago concerning your Olympic bid:

Don’t do it.

Take it from a city that has been there. Montreal suffered the one-two punch of the World’s Fair (1967) and Summer Games (1976) AND NEVER RECOVERED. The Olympic Stadium (dubbed “The Big Owe”) was a multi-million boondoggle. Initial estimates put the cost at $134 million. In 2006 the final term installment on the debt was paid off. Total cost? $1.61 billion. (Ahh but the chance to see your crappy Canadian athletes “go for the bronze”? Priceless.

A city should only showcase itself if it has solved the majority of its problems and is ready to be a model to the world. Lest we forget, for the World’s Fair Montreal massive billboards and partitions were erected to block out the urban blight, thus disenfranchising the poor working class Quebecois from all that world class (tabarnouche!).

Chicago? Have you solved your problems?

“Hey Gina… un castor, ben ouais”

Besides, the Olympics are for cities that have just arrived and are waiting for an invite to the dance (think Atlanta, China… and Calgary). Chicago? I think you’ve arrived. How much more tourism do you really need? Your infrastructure can barely hold up under the weight of your bloating current populous.

And your citizens will be paying for the upgrades for the rest of their lives through tax increases. President Obama I’m all for giving an economy a shot in the arm but not on the backs of the struggling working class.
Mr. President please give your state a break and sit this one out. Let Brazil be the world showcase. Lord knows they’ve solved all their problems.
